A Winning Success for Swatpro: The continuation of Swatpro North Bristol NHS Trusts Sector Based Work Academy

Swatpro not only responds to employer’s apprenticeship needs but also Local, community and business need requests from Local Enterprise Partnership areas (LEP), where the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) has devolved its responsibility for the contracting of the Adult Education Budget (AEB) to the LEP.

The recent award of AEB to Swatpro in the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has been very welcomed as it gives Swatpro additional resources to build on their successful programme within this area. This additional funding ensures the continuation of the highly successful Swatpro North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) Sector Based Work Academy (SBWA) enabling unemployed adults aged 19 and over to access support into work. This programme ensures that those attending to enhance their employability skills, English and maths (where required), receive careers advice and guidance along with a sector introduction qualification and a job interview for a vacancy within the NBT.

The learners are selected in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions and offers an open, transparent and diverse opportunity in line with the NHS Trust recruitment and Equality, Diversity and inclusion policy. Many learners progress into Apprenticeshiships from the programme or into other substantive posts with NBT. This SBWA is an integral part of the NBT recruitment plan.

Jonathan Hall – Acting Non-Medical Education Manager says that “North Bristol NHS Trust is proud to offer programmes such as the Sector Based Work Academy. We use this pathway to develop individual’s employability skills whilst allowing them to experience working life within an NHS Trust. We aim to offer at least four programmes throughout the year with the view to offering successful completers the opportunity to apply for an apprenticeship position with us”

In addition to the SBWA, and building on the Governments priority to ensure everyone has access and opportunity to reach a Level 2 in English and mathematics Swatpro partner NBT also offer their staff English and maths to enable them to reach a level of competence to support their job role.
