Varsity Training – the flexible approach wins praise

Throughout the South-West there are Swatpro partners working in many different fields, but each drawing on the organisation’s wealth of experience and shared good practice around training and apprenticeships.

Varsity Training are a Swatpro partner who specialise in the caring professions and management. Based in Weston-super-Mare but working with companies from across the South-West, Varsity offer Apprentices from level 3 to 5, as well as qualifications from ILM and City & Guilds. They work with NHS and non-NHS health providers, as well as the voluntary sector and private companies.

Some larger employers pay into the Apprenticeship Levy, others do not, but the company can advise on the best way forward to upskill staff. Like all Swatpro members, Varsity offer bespoke, person-centred courses with flexibility being key. Some courses are taught at the firm’s learning centre, at Worle, just outside the seaside town; for other companies, Varsity provide on-site training.

Petra is a community carer in Portishead who achieved level 3 certification through Varsity, enabling her to be a care skills plus carer. She says she enjoyed the course a lot, especially being in a class with people who did the same job as her and learning from them through discussions, as well as from the training. Petra says she learned new things on subjects she thought she already knew, as well as in new topics. She singles out learning about Personal Centred Care as being a major step forward for her career.

Petra says the Varsity experience wasn’t like being back at school but was relaxed and informative. “I could talk things through with people there. It helped my practice and was very enjoyable.”

She is now hoping to move further up the ladder onto level 4 qualification.

Varsity director Del Wraight says: “We get great feedback from our students and employers. Everyone tells us our training enhances their practice.”
