Callum’s apprenticeship shows real vision

One young man who has embarked on an Infrastructure Technician (level 3) apprenticeship is Callum McGovan, from Cornwall.

Callum works for Vision Independent Financial Planning in Falmouth.

He has always been interested in working in the financial industry, he says, and has also had an interest in IT, born from spending time around computers from a young age.

His apprenticeship enables him to marry up those two enthusiasms.

"I think in the coming years, cybersecurity and IT qualifications will become the most sought after in all industries as they move into a more digital environment, especially with the current climate," he notes.

Callum is tutored by the sector specialists at Swatpro Digital Academy in Plymouth.

His BCS accredited apprenticeship combines classroom lessons with remotely delivered teaching, and a large portion is done in situ at his workplace.

It is the first time Swatpro have worked with Vision, and the first time Vision has taken on an Infrastructure Technician apprentice.

Sam Fidock, Vision’s Network Development Manager, said: "Hiring our first IT apprentice is very exciting. Callum has joined us with a real passion for IT and a desire to offer a great service, putting our clients first.

"Callum has been with us for a few weeks now and in that short time has made a significant impact. We look forward to what next year will bring!"

Callum provides frontline IT support to a range of internal users at Vision; dealing with a varied pattern of requests.

He is enthusiastic about the role and the way the apprenticeship is helping him get to grips with it.

"An apprenticeship in the digital sector is great as your training is constantly validating the work you are doing and verifies you understand your work from a theory point of view," he explains.

With an eye to the future, he adds: "Any training I complete through the apprenticeship that I don’t use currently in my day to day work at Vision might come into play in the future and benefit the company in ways unforeseen."

Dave Massey, Swatpro Digital Academy’s training specialist, has been impressed by Callum.

"Callum is a motivated and positive individual, who is keen to further develop his skills, knowledge and experience towards further progressing his career within the IT industry and job role at Vision.

"It is excellent for apprentices like Callum to have a dynamic and supportive employer like Vision, who are a great advocate for apprenticeships and realise the benefits and value they can offer as well as being an award-winning financial advice company."
