Budget sees apprenticeships and traineeships flagged up once again

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, once again put apprentices and traineeship initiatives high on the Government's priority list in today’s Budget.

The flagship announcement to support a “high skill, higher productivity economy” was the pre-announced news that the £3,000 apprentice hiring incentive for employers had been extended until January 2022. The government will continue to cover 95% of apprenticeship training costs for employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy.

The Chancellor also announced that the national minimum wage for apprentices will increase next April from £4.30 to £4.81 per hour. The 51p increase equates to an 11.9 per cent rise and is in line with a recommendation from the Low Pay Commission. It will take effect from April 1, 2022.
