Overview of the Role
The broad purpose of the occupation is to lay bricks and blocks, sometimes utilising modern methods of construction and pre-manufactured elements to construct walls. Bricklayers carry out simple setting out, prepare mortar and use a trowel to lay bricks, mortar and apply damp-proof materials to complete the project to specification and required design. Bricklayers use spirit levels and plumb lines to check building alignment and use hammers and chisels to shape and trim bricks and blocks. Bricklayers typically work outdoors on construction sites, in most weathers and at height.
Details of the Standard
An apprenticeship standard is the nationally recognised training programme mapped for a specific role. Each standard is developed by industry-leading employers and apprenticeship experts. The Bricklayer Standard consists of training and other activities where knowledge, skills and behaviours are acquired, allowing the apprentice to learn, develop and apply practical skills with their new competencies.
Entry Requirements
Employers will set their own entry requirements in order to start on this apprenticeship, but often include GCSE Grade C/4 in English and maths.
English and Maths
To complete the apprenticeship the employee must pass level 1 English and maths, (or have the appropriate exemption certificate) and work towards and attempt level 2 before undertaking their End-Point-Assessment.
Curriculum Overview
The content delivery will be agreed between the apprentice, employer and training provider and is based upon prior knowledge and qualifications. This agreement forms the individualised Training Plan, detailing how the knowledge, skills and behaviours in the apprenticeship Standard will be met.
Delivery & Readiness
As a gateway requirement, apprentices without Level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.
Summary of End-Point-Assessment
The assessment consists of three parts and will be completed within a three-month period after gateway. The three components consist of a multiple-choice test, an interview that is underpinned by a portfolio of evidence and finally, a practical assessment with questions.
Progression
Progression from this apprenticeship is typically to a Level 3 Craft Bricklayer or alternative trade. Learners who move into supervisory positions also can also progress to NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision.
