Details of the Standard

Mechatronics Maintenance Technicians work across sectors such as aerospace, aviation, automotive, defence, logistics, pharmaceutical, energy, food and drink, and wider advanced manufacturing. They maintain complex automated equipment that combines mechanical, electrical, electronic, control and fluid power systems. Their role includes installation, testing, fault finding, rectification, modification and ongoing planned maintenance to keep plant and equipment performing safely, efficiently and to the required standard. They may work in factories, hangars, workshops or outside, and may be required to work shifts, at height or in confined spaces. They are responsible for the quality and accuracy of their work, compliance with health and safety and environmental requirements, and completing tasks within defined timescales.

There are no mandatory statutory entry requirements set within the standard, although employers may set their own entry criteria

English and Maths

English and maths must be achieved in line with current apprenticeship funding rules.

Curriculum Overview

  • Accepting and preparing for maintenance tasks, including documentation and electronic records.
  • Planning maintenance activity to minimise disruption and obtaining any permits or permissions required.
  • Selecting, preparing and checking tools, equipment, materials and other resources.
  • Setting up safe systems of work and complying with statutory and organisational requirements.
  • Manufacturing, repairing or refurbishing components using hand and machine tools.
  • Carrying out mechatronics maintenance activities on complex systems and equipment.
  • Revising, updating and storing maintenance documentation and records.
  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance and operational checks.
  • Using condition monitoring techniques and results to assess equipment condition.
  • Using test and measuring equipment, including electrical and physical measurement tools, to support diagnosis and maintenance.
  • Returning equipment to service, reconnecting ancillary systems and carrying out final functional and quality checks.
  • Restoring the workplace, handing over completed work and contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Communicating effectively with colleagues and stakeholders to achieve work goals.

Summary of End-Point-Assessment

The EPA period is typically 6 months and includes three assessment methods:

Assessment method 1: Multiple-choice test, with 40 questions completed in 60 minutes, graded fail, pass or distinction.

Assessment method 2: Observation with questioning, carried out in the workplace, lasting 3 hours, graded fail or pass.

Assessment method 3: Interview underpinned by a portfolio, lasting 60 minutes, graded fail, pass or distinction.

The overall apprenticeship is graded fail, pass, merit or distinction

Progression

Progression could include higher-level engineering roles and further learning. Skills England’s progression map shows links from this occupation into roles such as Engineering Manufacturing Technician (Level 4) and Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician (Level 4).
