Breaking Down Barriers to Learning Through Functional Skills

Recently, I have been supporting a young learner enrolled on an apprenticeship that includes Functional Skills; it has been incredibly rewarding to see them embrace learning in such a positive way. Through building trust and creating a safe, supportive space where they can speak openly without fear of judgement, the learner is thriving.
They attend regular sessions, enjoy their learning journey and are making fantastic progress, with the results speaking for themselves. Seeing their confidence grow has been a real highlight and a reminder of the difference the right support can make.
I am also delighted to see an apparent increase in the uptake of Functional Skills, despite English and maths qualifications no longer being a mandatory requirement for all apprenticeships. This reflects the value learners place on developing these essential skills and gaining recognised qualifications.
I feel privileged to support such passionate, committed and motivated learners and to play a part in helping them overcome barriers, build confidence and unlock their potential.

Whether you are starting an apprenticeship, developing your skills in your current role or considering a change of direction, you do not need to have your whole career mapped out. A useful starting point is knowing what matters to you and identifying one practical next step.
